RNZRSA supports NZ Service Personnel in wake of President Trump’s Afghanistan comments

The RNZRSA's National President Tony Hill, MBE has made the following statement:

The Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association strongly rejects any suggestion that NATO forces “stood back” from the front line in Afghanistan. While New Zealand is not a member of NATO, our Defence Force deployed in support of these operations.

As a small nation, New Zealand relies on the international rule of law and collective security arrangements, rather than a “might is right” approach. When smaller nations combine their capabilities in multinational operations, they deliver real and meaningful effect — and New Zealand has consistently played its part, including on the front line.

New Zealand service personnel are internationally respected for their professionalism, adaptability, and leadership, and for the way they work alongside and support local communities. Our forces have frequently filled critical capability gaps within multinational missions and operated at all levels, often in demanding and high-risk environments.

Many of the New Zealanders who have been killed or injured in service in recent decades were doing so in support of multinational operations. Any suggestion that diminishes or misrepresents that service is deeply offensive to their families, their comrades, and the wider veteran community.

The RNZRSA supports New Zealand’s enduring commitment to working alongside international partners in rules-based solutions to global security challenges. That commitment has come at a cost, borne by those who served and continue to serve.

We acknowledge President Trump’s subsequent recognition that his comments were out of line. However, we remain concerned about the impact such remarks may have had on current and former service men and women. The RNZRSA is here to support anyone affected and encourages those needing assistance to contact their local RSA or District Support Manager: https://rnzrsa.info/supportmanager
