Alison Mau: NZDF will have to dig deeper on assault and harassment after four years of fighting words

OPINION: Reporting harassment at work, as anyone who’s tried will tell you, is a fraught, uncomfortable, and sometimes terrifying thing to do. Now, imagine you’re a junior NCO or a new recruit trying to do that in New Zealand’s armed forces.

These are the women (and some men) who are most often being assaulted and harassed by their serving colleagues, and as Chief of Airforce Andrew Clark told me this week, the forces’ hierarchical structure – with its inherent reliance on discipline – makes it even harder for them to speak up.
