I had been aware of this book’s development for the past year and looked forward to reading it. I was not disappointed. This is a diary account of a young naval reservist who served in HMNZS Hickleton during Confrontation; an undeclared war between Indonesia and Malaysia in 1964-66. Illustrated with many personal photographs this tells of life at sea during a tense period of South East Asia’s history. I wish that I could write in such a clear and informative manner as Jim Warren has done. This is an excellent bookshelf partner to my book ‘A Kiwi on Our Funnel’ – the story of Hickleton and Santon. This was a pleasure to read and is a treasured addition to my library.

I recommend this to all those who were there who will relate to the many stories Jim has recorded. For others it gives a very clear insight into life as it was during those difficult but exciting days.
