On initial examination the book appeared to be yet another account of
a soldiers war in the Italian campaign from 1944 – 1945. However,
“Scotch” has managed to take the reader, with no personal
knowledge of these days, into the battle lines of 22 Battalion 2NZEF with
vivid descriptions of everyday activities. His memories of the many facets
of the warfare during the Italian seasons from snow and mud, to heat and
dust are intriguing. A soldier, who resigned his pre-war territorial commission
so he could go overseas, was quickly promoted and commissioned in the
field. The award of the Military Cross is indicative of his bravery and
courage.
A great companion to the bookshelves of all those interested in the
WWII Italian campaign.
