Armistice Day 2005

To commemorate the 87th Anniversary of the Armistice declared at 11.00am on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, a national commemorative service was held on 11 November 2005 in the National War Memorial at Wellington.

In attendance were their Excellencies the Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright, Mr Peter Cartwright, representatives of the government and other political parties, foreign dignitaries, senior military officers, veterans and members of the RNZRSA National Executive.

In a moving ceremony lead by the Very Reverend Michael Brown, Chaplain Commandant, assisted by the Principal Defence Chaplain Julian Wagg, the congregation heard tributes to those who fell during World War One.

After the laying of wreaths, which included one from the students of St Marks School, the commemoration was read by James Dawson, a student of Wellington College. On completion of the service the dignitaries lead the congregation in placing roses and poppies on the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior.
