Olympians to Honour War Dead

New Zealand Olympians will pay homage to the Kiwi war dead buried in the Athens Memorial/Phaleron War Cemetery on 10 August 2004.

“The Olympic Games Team from New Zealand considers that it is appropriate and fitting to pay its respects to those New Zealand soldiers who fell in the Defence of Mainland Greece (1941) and during the Battle for Crete (1941)” said Chef de Mission Mr Currie.

“In particular we will focus our Remembrance Service around Olympian, George Campbell Cooke (Games of the X Olympiad, Los Angeles 1932 Rowing, who as a Corporal in the NZ Army was killed in Crete on 23 May 1941.

A Greek contingent of religious, political and military representatives will attend, along with New Zealand political representatives for Greece.
