Historic gun has new resting place

A German WWI artillery gun, captured in France in 1917, was for many years placed at the entrance to Newtown Park in Wellington. The Wellington City Council in conjunction with the Wellington RSA, arranged several years ago to have the gun removed and refurbished. Following that it has been repositioned to a more public site, in the Park above the Cable Car at Kelburn.

On Saturday 27 September 2003, the gun was formally blessed at the new site. Malcom Faulls, President of the Wellington RSA was at the dedication of the Krupp howitzer and in his address acknowledged the importance of this memento of WWI:

The Krupp Gun represents the events of 86 years ago when New Zealand was suffering tremendous loss of life on the other side of the world.

The Wellington City Council and the other parties to the restoration work we are seeing today are to be congratulated on the time and effort and funding that has been required.

We urge the city to see this as but one step in preserving the defence sites that remain in the city and have yet to be properly preserved
