The meeting of returned soldier representatives from
around the country that formed the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association,
28 April 1916, at the Soldiers' Club, 290 Lambton Quay, Wellington. The
chairman and inaugural president, Captain Donald Simson, is seated in
the second row (fourth from left). The armband worn by the returned soldier
in the front row (second from right) was authorised by government for
wounded returned soldiers but the red armband was generally unpopular
with the men.
