DECEMBER 2005
Northland Cataract Project Report
In 2002 the Northland District Executive, concerned at the number of
veterans, and in particular WW2 veterans, waiting for cataract surgery,
undertook a pilot project to fast-track operations using the private system.
The Executive established the Northland District Trust, with its first
objective to finance cataract surgery for those unable to comfortably
meet the cost from their own resources.
The Executive negotiated discounted fees with local eye specialists and
hospitals, and with grants and donations from the Northland Provincial
Patriotic Council, RSAs and individuals, the first operations were done
in January 2004.

Applicants who can afford to do so are asked to make a contribution towards
the cost. Additional funding comes through RNZRSA, Womens Sections, affiliated
organisations and private donations. To date, the Trust has raised over
$160,000 and has partially or fully funded 60 operations. The Ministry
of Health has applauded its work and initiative, although no Government
funding has been received. By taking veterans out of the public system
other, non-service, patients have had their cataracts done sooner rather
than later. Letters of appreciation have delighted the Trustees and shown
what an improvement to quality of life has resulted from the operations.
For example, renewal of driving licences, ability to read books again,
comments such as ‘ 2nd. chance in life’,‘I had forgotten
how beautiful New Zealand is’, ‘the trees and flowers are
so beautiful and bright’: ‘I can now see my friends across
the street’ and ‘I can’t say thank you enough….
the operations have given me a new outlook on life…’.
To help continue the programme, tax-deductible donations are most welcome
and may be sent to the Secretary of the Trust at PO Box 46, Wellsford.
