SEPTEMBER 2003
British Medical Records
England And Wales
When a patient moves abroad, their health records are sent to the local
Primary Care Trust for GP records and the local NHS Trust for hospital
records. GP records are retained for a minimum of 10 years, and hospital
records are retained for a minimum of 8 years, though certain types of
records are kept for longer.
Scotland
GP records are usually only stored for 6 years after a person goes abroad
but there are some exceptions. There are 3 places where they are stored
depending on where the person last lived. Aberdeen, Edinburgh or Glasgow.
If you would like more information on how to find the appropriate archive
for your records please contact me at RNZRSA HQ.
