‘Year of the Veteran’ Commendations

The ‘Year of the Veteran' Commendations are a way of recognising members of the community who have undertaken activities for the benefit and support of veterans.

Who can be nominated?
Any person who has provided outstanding service to the veteran community can be nominated for a commendation. This service could be through:

•  Volunteer welfare work with veterans and their
   families; or
•  Work in maintaining Services Cemeteries; or
•  Work restoring and preserving memorials; or
•  Educating children about the role played by veterans.

People who are in paid employment to assist veterans can not be nominated for a commendation.

Who can make a nomination?
Nominations can be made by any person or organisation.

How do you nominate someone?
To nominate someone for a commendation, you need to complete a ‘Year of the Veteran' Commendation nomination form.

What is the deadline for submitting a nomination?
Nominations can be made at any time up until 30 November 2006.

Who decides who should receive a commendation?
The Minister of Veterans' Affairs will make a decision on each nomination based on the advice he is given by a Ministerial Steering Committee that includes representatives of various government agencies, local government and the RNZRSA.

Will my nomination be confidential?
Yes. All nominations will be treated in the strictest confidence. Details of the person making the nomination will not be disclosed.

Is it possible to discuss nominations?
All nominations will be acknowledged, but it is not possible to enter into correspondence or discussion on the merits of any particular nomination.
