The Office of Veterans’ Affairs New Zealand has confirmed that a New Zealand delegation is to travel to Cassino, Italy, to attend the 60th Anniversary commemorations of the Battle of Monte Cassino.

Twenty places have been reserved for New Zealand veterans of the Cassino campaign, and they will travel as part of the delegation.

Whilst full details in relation to the trip are not yet finalised, it is expected that the party will leave New Zealand around 14th May and arrive back in New Zealand around 26th May 2004. Travel will be by way of an RNZAF Boeing 757 aircraft.

As applications received are likely to exceed the twenty places available, a Ballot will be held to select the veteran party. A number of ‘Reserves’ will also be drawn.

The Ballot will be conducted by RNZRSA at National Headquarters on Thursday, 25th March 2004 in the presence of the National President RNZRSA and the Director Veterans’ Affairs New Zealand.

Those who are successful will be notified within 24 hours, all others will be advised by mail.

Final acceptance for travel by those successful in the Ballot will be subject to medical clearance by the veterans’ own GP as reviewed by NZDF Medical staff.

Applications closed 5.00pm on Monday, 22 March 2004.
